Retinal Imaging as a Tool For Detecting Poor Nutritional Habits

LECTURE ABSTRACT: With poor eating habits and the increase in body mass index across all age groups, the incidence of diabetes type 2 has been on the rise along with hypertension, glaucoma, and cardiovascular diseases. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that, currently, 171 million people worldwide have diabetes mellitus and predicts that 366 million people will have diabetes by 2030. Age-related macular degeneration affects 800,000 Canadians over the age of 40. Early detection programs to prevent loss of vision can consist simply of a retinal eye imaging session with a nonmydriatic camera and ocular coherent tomography (OCT). Software-driven filters can assist in isolating specific ocular layers that often reveal conditions such as glaucoma (in the blue layer), diabetes (in the green layer), and age-related macular degeneration (in the red layer). Further advances in software image manipulation allow topographical views of the posterior pole with a single image. When used in tandem with OCT technology, these images are helpful for determining or validating further patient care or referral.

From anterior segment to posterior pole - keeping an eye on technique to highlight ocular health.

Abstract
Ocular imaging techniques have become an important tool in our everyday practice this, especially true since the age of digital imaging and the sharing of our images with other health professionals in the realm of tele-ocular health care. This lecture will illustrate specific techniques to maximize your slit lamp photographic techniques as well as standardizing retinal images with a non mydriatic retinal camera. In addition to this, we will review the role that imaging software plays in using certain enhancement tools as well as secure store and forward applications.

Join us for a highly interactive lecture and workshop.
